WHY THIS FILM MATTERS
Sharing immigrant experiences not only acknowledges the difficulties and loneliness they face settling in an unfamiliar country, but it also highlights their resilience and strength. I believe that impactful storytelling is a powerful tool to pave the way for empathy and compassion, especially for marginalized communities. And finding common ground through shared values can help bridge the gap between different lived experiences, cultures, and generations. While celebrating immigrant voices cultivates a more inclusive society, it also offers validation that they matter.

The screenplay was inspired by my Korean immigrant mother, which is why this project holds a special place in my heart. Many Asian tiger moms don’t hold artistic careers in high regard, so when I revealed to her that I was making a short film loosely based on our relationship, I mentally prepared myself for a long, drawn out lecture. But instead, I was met with encouragement where she told me, “You have to do it. You have to live the life you want.” There’s a softness to my mother now that’s hardly recognizable from my childhood, and it really shows how much her compassion and empathy has grown over the years which is highlighted in the film.
